CPEAV Annual Awards
Since 1956, annual awards have been given to individuals and organizations for outstanding contributions toward good planning and community betterment. Awards have honored individuals, groups and youth groups for a great variety of activities—each of which has greatly bettered its community!
Although CPEAV presents it awards
to deserving recipients at its Annual Conference each October, the search for
those recipients is a continuing process. Each Member, Director of Planning, and friend
is asked to identify citizens and citizen groups in their home community whose volunteer work has made an outstanding contribution to the betterment of the citizens, the locality, the region or the Commonwealth.
Therefore, Nominees may be submitted to CPEAV at any time. Contact the
Secretary for details.
The members and friends of CPEAV and residents of a community, are the “true experts” about local planning, conservation, transportation and community development activities, as well as being most knowledgeable about those whose work made it come together and good things happen. It is not enough for us, the members of the planning community, to be the sole keepers of this valued information. Only after being viewed as examples do such efforts gain true power to inspire others to excel.
CPEAV continuously seeks to meet its founders’ goal of increasing public understanding of the value of planning. We want to recognize and publicize meritorious examples of community improvement that have resulted from sound application of good planning principles and practices. As in all CPEAV matters, if you have questions contact the office using our toll-free number and we will assist you as best we can.
While CPEAV supports scholarships at the Virginia universities for students preparing for careers as professional planners, this program seeks to focus our attention on the contributions of individual citizens and citizen groups who have met the challenge and overcome problems by dedication and hard work; often with little or no community-wide recognition.
If you need additional information, please leave a message on our toll-free 24-hour CPEAV voice and fax phone: 1-888-827-2482. Also, you may contact Ms. Ann F. White, Awards Committee Chair, at 757-229-7456. Either Ms. White or the CPEAV office will contact you as quickly as possible. Please note that
each fall the Awards Chairman set a due date for submitting your completed nomination and documentation
the summer and fall issues of the Newsletter will announce that date annually.

Annual Awards Nomination Criteria
The
Mission Statement of the Citizens Planning
Education Association of Virginia states that CPEAV
" . . . provides a variety
of educational programs for land use planning, to strengthen knowledge for
skillful and responsible community planning by governing bodies, advisory
boards, commissions, and private citizens in the Commonwealth of Virginia." One of the four CPEAV Goals is: “To promote the importance of planning at the local, regional and state level.” The CPEAV believes there is no better way to accomplish these aims than to recognize the efforts of those individuals, organizations, and groups whose efforts have reflected these goals and have resulted in noteworthy improvements in their respective communities. The CPEAV Awards Program seeks to identify those individuals and organizations and knowledge of their accomplishments in order to appropriately recognize and honor them for their achievements.
The CPEAV Awards Program seeks nominations for candidates in the following award categories:
CITIZEN AWARD
A Citizen Award may be given to an individual or group that has made a notable and constructive contribution to the harmonious and orderly development of its community, region, the state or the nation. This contribution must have a long-range objective worthy of state-wide interest, provide a sensible answer to a real need, and create benefits beyond purely economic ones. The Award may be for a specific project initiated and carried through, or for steady, unrecognized efforts over a period of years if the cumulative effect of such work or project is noteworthy.
CITATION
A Citation(s) may be given to individuals, groups, or citizen planners who have extended their activities far beyond the requirements or duties of their positions; whose presence in a community has contributed notably to increased interest in planning and has led to positive planning accomplishments; or who have undertaken and carried through community projects which may be more limited in scope but otherwise comparable to those meeting Citizen Award project criteria.
Professional planners may be considered for a Citation if they have volunteered their time and expertise “beyond the call of duty” and have involved citizens of the community in a major planning project.
YOUTH AWARD
A Youth Award may be given to recognize and encourage young people, other than college students, who have been involved in the planning process and the improvement and/or development of their community.
SELECTION OF WINNERS
Selection of Award winners is made by the CPEAV Awards Committee based upon the nomination, the project description, and the supporting documentation. Thus, it is important that each submittal fully describe the activities and accomplishments of the nominee and the relationships of the accomplishment to the planning process. The Awards Committee will give preference to citizen-oriented projects. Those projects that would normally qualify for submittal to the American Planning Association for professional awards will be accepted and evaluated on the basis of citizen involvement and participation in their preparation and adoption processes. Nominations may be made by CPEAV members or any other knowledgeable citizen of the Commonwealth.
Photographs, news clippings, and other supporting documentation illustrating and explaining the significance of the nominee’s work will be welcomed. All material submitted will become the property of CPEAV and will not be returned unless a specific request is received together with adequate return postage or shipping costs.
